A vacuum that runs briefly after charging is not the same as one that never charges. Before ordering a battery, describe the conditions under which it stops. A useful enquiry compares like-for-like use, rather than a headline runtime from a different model.
Record the mode and attachment
Dyson explains that Max and Boost modes use more power and are intended for brief intensive cleaning. Use the normal everyday mode recommended for your exact model when recording performance. Note the attachment and surface too. Do not interpret a short high-power run as proof that the battery has failed.
Make a simple observation log
- Model: the full name and label information.
- Charge: whether the correct charger indicates charging and completion as described in the manual.
- Use: power mode, attachment, surface and approximate time until stopping.
- Behaviour: gradual weakening, repeated pulsing, a sudden stop, or a warning message.
- History: whether the change happened suddenly or over several months.
You do not need to repeatedly run the machine flat or carry out a stress test. If it becomes unusually hot, smells burnt or has a damaged battery, stop using it and contact the team.
Check which symptom you actually have
If it does not respond to the charger, use our charging-fault guide. If it repeatedly switches on and off, see pulsing and cut-outs. Poor pickup with the motor still running belongs in the airflow guide. These paths help you describe the symptom; none replaces an assessment.
When a battery assessment helps
Dyson notes that batteries can lose capacity over time. A decline in ordinary-use runtime is worth checking, but the workshop still needs to distinguish battery condition from a charging or other fault. Bring the vacuum and its charger, plus the attachment used when the problem occurs.
Ask what the proposed repair addresses and what improvement can reasonably be expected for your machine. There is no single runtime promise that applies to every model and attachment.
